The 90s camcorder look, recorded on your iPhone

Living-room light, a zoom that went a little too far, colour that bled past the edges. The 1995 era records video that looks like it came off a tape.

Why camcorder footage looked like that

Home camcorders recorded analogue, standard-definition video onto tape. Colour was stored with far less detail than brightness, so reds and blues bled past the edges of things. Every copy and every replay added noise, and worn tapes showed tracking lines. Indoor footage leaned orange under bulbs, and bright skies outside clipped to white.

What the 1995 era does

1995 · Home Video is the video era of Nostalgia Camera: it records clips rather than photos. The look adds colour noise and bleed, grain, softness, a little bloom and a light vignette. The app suggests turning your phone to landscape for a classic camcorder frame.

Tape Daylight and Tape Indoor come with the era; Tape Night is an extra profile for dark rooms and streets. 1995 is a Pro era, so recording with it requires Pro, an optional in-app purchase. The pictures on this page are stills processed with the era’s look; in the app, this era records video.

Where the look works

Birthdays, family dinners, holidays, skate and dance clips, a friend playing guitar. Things that move and have sound.

Short clips feel more authentic than long takes. Slow pans and a deliberate zoom or two help; stabilised, cinematic movement works against the look.

How to shoot it

  1. Choose 1995 · Home Video in the era picker.
  2. Turn your iPhone to landscape for the classic camcorder frame.
  3. Use Tape Indoor under lamps and Tape Daylight outside.
  4. Record short clips with slow pans. Let someone narrate, the way every family video had a narrator.
